Remote monitoring

For a remote power plant (full solar or hybrid), the information regarding its operation and performance is critical for effective long-term predictions for maintenance.

The built-in data logging features of the MAXI TRACK regulator simplifies routine inspections and maintenance of the solar systems.

Real time and recorded information can be downloaded locally, or remotely via an optional modem (GSM, satellite, radio, or switched telephone networks).
Remote monitoring is an efficient way to reduce operating cost.

What is Oil Shale?

U.S. Western oil shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock which is very rich in organic sedimentary material called “kerogen.” The shale is heated to separate the kerogen from the rock and the resultant liquid is converted to superior quality jet fuel, diesel fuel, kerosene, and other high value products.
  • To see how much oil the U.S. has in oil shale, check out our Energy Inventory(Hint–the U.S. has 4 times the recoverable oil in oil shale as Saudi Arabia’s proven reserves).
An announcement from the U.S. Geological Survey raised previous estimates of oil shale in the Piceance Basin by 50%. Previous U.S.  oil shale technically recoverable resource estimates totaled 2.118 trillion barrels.[i] The new announcement brings the total technically recoverable oil shale resource estimate to 2.6 trillion barrels. The richest, most concentrated deposits in the U.S. are found in the Green River Formation in western Colorado, eastern Utah, and southern Wyoming (see graph at below).
U.S.-Oil-shale-resources
Depending on technology and economics, as much as 1 trillion barrels of oil equivalent could be recoverable from oil shale resources yielding greater than 25 gallons per ton [iii]. For reference, 1 trillion barrels is nearly 4 times the amount of proven oil reserves in Saudi Arabia. The energy potential from our vast resources of oil shale could substantially shift the balance of America’s oil supply away from the Persian Gulf.
Shell’s In-Situ Conversion Process
In Colorado, Shell has experimented with a process that heats the shale underground. Their in-situ conversion process (ICP) uses subsurface heaters to slowly heat the shale rock to 650 – 750 degrees Fahrenheit. Once heated, the kerogen oil and gas are released from the shale and brought to the surface with traditional pumps. An advantage to the in-situ process is it significantly reduces (and in some cases eliminates) the environmental impacts from previous shale oil recovery methods [iv

Shale oil: the next energy revolution

The global impact of shale oil could revolutionise the world’s energy markets over the next couple of decades, resulting in significantly lower oil prices, higher global GDP, changing geopolitics and shifting business models for oil and gas companies, according to new analysis from PwC.
The potential availability and accessibility of significant resources of shale oil around the globe - and the potential effect of increased shale oil production in limiting growth in global oil prices - has implications that stretch far beyond the oil industry.
Shale oil has the potential to reshape the global economy, increasing energy security, independence and affordability in the long term. However, these benefits need to be squared with broader environmental objectives at both the local and global level.
The effects of a lower oil price resonate along the entire energy value chain, and investment choices based on long-term predictions of a steady increase in real oil prices may need to be reassessed. The potential magnitude of the impact of shale oil makes it a profound force for change in energy markets and the wider global economy. It is therefore critical for companies and policy-makers to consider the strategic implications of these changes now.

First US public offering of solar bonds: can crowdfunding take clean energy to the next level?

First US public offering of solar bonds: can crowdfunding take clean energy to the next level?
The largest solar installer in the US announced Wednesday that it is offering up to $200m in bonds to retail investors, marking the first registered public sale of solar bonds in the country. SolarCity’s landmark move toward crowdfunding could democratize the way solar projects are bankrolled *and grow overall investment for clean energy.

Large institutional investors (such as Google, Honda and US Bank, in the case of SolarCity projects) finance the bulk of solar projects today. While individual investors can already put money into solar projects via crowdfunding platforms such as Mosaic, SunFunder and Crowdsun.com, most of these opportunities are only available to accredited investors – wealthy individuals – or are limited to just one or a few states, said Tim Newell, SolarCity’s vice president of financial products.

“This is the first time you’re seeing investment offered broadly to American investors through a public offering,” Newell said on a press conference call Tuesday. “In other cases, companies are allowing investors to invest in a single solar project or perhaps a small group of homes or projects.”

It’s an important shift given that investments in clean energy have been falling, even as the global solar and wind markets see double-digit growth. Investment flows have dropped about 20% in the past two years as solar and wind prices have fallen, Michael Liebreich, head of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, said during aClimate Week event in New York last month.

But investors are looking for the types of steady returns that clean energy projects can provide, said Steve Cornell, senior vice president of policy and strategy at NRG, at the same event. “It’s no news to anybody that CDs are paying next to nothing and cash is paying less,” he said. “I think there’s a huge global appetite for yield-like investments that can create steady capital growth.”

The SolarCity bonds, which are available to US nationals in all 50 states who are at least 18 years old and have a US bank account, will represent a portfolio of thousands of projects across the country. Through its new direct investment website, SolarCity is offering a range of bonds – starting at $1,000 – that mature in one to seven years and pay up to 4% interest out of income from SolarCity’s projects.

South Africa opens its biggest solar plant

The new 96 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar power project in South Africa's Northern Cape province is now online and will help the country meet its critical electricity needs.
The Jasper plant, near Kimberly, is the largest on the continent and can produce 180 000 megawatt-hours of energy a year for South African residents, enough to power up 80 000 homes.
The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and is fully operational, SolarReserve, the developer, announced on 11 November.
Jasper is located in a solar park near Kimberly that also includes the 75 MW Lesedi solar power project, which came online in May.
Also on the cards is the even-bigger 100 MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) tower. SolarReserve, along with partner ACWA Power, is bidding for the planned Redstone CSP project, which will use of SolarReserve’s CSP technology with integrated energy storage.
As part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), a percentage of total project revenues from the Jasper project will be set aside for Enterprise Development and Socio-Economic Development for the benefit of the local communities.
"In addition to helping South Africa meet its critical electricity needs, the Jasper Project will bring long lasting economic benefits to the region," said SolarReserve's CEO Kevin Smith.

Rwanda Solar Grid Capitalizes on Limited Sunshine

The biggest solar power plant in East Africa has just opened in Rwanda. It is the first grid level solar plant in the region - a 21-hectare field covered with panels.  Rwanda might not seem an obvious place to put it, as the country averages only about five hours of sunshine per day, and not much more where the plant is located. However, sunshine is not the whole story.
Until last month, South Africa was the only country in sub-Saharan Africa to have a substantial amount of solar power feeding into its grid.
Ghana has great plans for solar energy, but cloudy Rwanda has overtaken the West Africans by actually completing a large scale photovoltaic (PV) solar park.
The one that just opened at the Agahozo Shalom village in eastern Rwanda has peak capacity of 8.5 megawatts, nearly seven percent of capacity on the national grid.  The government has signed a power purchase agreement, or PPA, with Gigawatt Global to pay for that electricity over 25 years. Scatec Solar, a Norway based company, built the plant at Agahozo Shalom village.
